Money, freedom, a story of the CFA franc
Katy Léna Ndiaye
One thousand nine hundred and sixty marks the end of the colonial empires on the African continent. France disappears from the map… only in theory. The CFA franc, a currency attached to the French Treasury since its origins, still circulates in almost all of its former territories south of the Sahara. Today backed by the euro, it offers not only France, but also its Eurozone partners privileged and easy access to African markets. On the diplomatic scene, the CFA system confers a central role to Paris which is perceived and poses as a “Guarantor”, “Interceder” for the international community. Fourteen states still preserve this curious heritage. What are the reasons ? At the end of History, there is the Fable.
